How Are Dubai Taxi Fares Calculated?
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) strictly regulates all taxi fares in Dubai to ensure transparency and protect consumers. Unlike some cities where taxis operate on negotiated zones, Dubai taxis operate exclusively on digital meters calibrated by the RTA. When you step into a taxi, the meter starts with a base fare (known as the "Flag Drop" fare), and then incrementally adds charges based on either the distance traveled or the time elapsed, whichever is higher.
There are two primary calculation models used in Dubai, depending on the type of taxi you hail:
- Regular DTC Taxis (Distance-Based): The traditional cream-colored Dubai Transport Corporation (DTC) taxis and the newer red taxis calculate fares primarily using the distance traveled in kilometers.
- Hala Taxis (Time-Based): The green Hala taxis, which are integrated with the Hala app (operated by Careem), calculate fares primarily based on the time elapsed in minutes, regardless of minor distance variations. This model is similar to ride-hailing algorithms.
Official RTA Taxi Rates (2024 Update)
Understanding the exact components of your taxi fare prevents surprises at the end of your journey. The RTA adjusts these rates periodically. Below are the current standard tariffs:

Important Note on Salik (Toll Gates): If your taxi route passes through a Salik toll gate (such as Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Barsha), an additional AED 4.00 per toll gate is automatically added to your final metered fare. This calculator does not automatically add Salik charges, so you must factor them in if your route includes toll roads.
Hala Taxi vs. Regular DTC Taxi: What is the Difference?
Visitors and expats often wonder whether they should hail a traditional street taxi or book a Hala taxi via the app. The choice affects your final fare.
When Regular DTC Taxis are Cheaper
Because DTC taxis charge by distance (AED 2.19/km), they are highly cost-effective for longer highway trips with minimal traffic. For example, a 30 km trip on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road with no traffic will cost significantly less in a regular taxi than a Hala taxi. If you are traveling during off-peak hours, flagging down a cream or red taxi is usually the most economical choice.
When Hala Taxis are Cheaper or Better
Hala taxis charge AED 0.58 per minute. If you are traveling short distances (under 5 km) or traveling during rush hour where speeds drop below 20 km/h, the Hala meter runs much slower than the DTC distance meter. Furthermore, Hala taxis offer the convenience of app-based booking, upfront fare estimates, cashless payments, and the ability to rate your driver.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) to City Center Taxi Fare
One of the most common journeys for tourists is from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to downtown areas like Deira, Bur Dubai, or Downtown Dubai (approximately 10 to 15 kilometers).
- Regular Airport Taxi (DTC): The flag drop at the airport is higher (AED 25.00). A trip to Downtown Dubai (approx. 12 km) will cost around AED 50 to AED 60 AED, plus a AED 4 Salik toll if taking the airport tunnel road.
- Hala Airport Taxi: Available at the airport, but generally more expensive for this specific route due to the time-based meter. Expect to pay AED 60 to AED 75 AED.
- Alternative: The Dubai Metro (Red Line) connects DXB directly to many central areas for only AED 5 to AED 9 AED, making it the best budget option if you do not have heavy luggage.
Do Dubai Taxis Accept Cash and Card?
Yes. All RTA-regulated taxis in Dubai, including both Regular DTC and Hala taxis, are legally required to accept both cash and contactless card payments (Nol cards, Visa, Mastercard). However, it is always best practice to ask the driver, "Do you take card?" before starting your journey if you do not have cash, as some older card terminals in taxis may occasionally experience connectivity issues.
Tips for Saving Money on Dubai Taxis
- Avoid Salik Routes When Possible: Ask the driver to avoid toll gates if the alternative route only adds a few minutes to the trip. Paying AED 4 per toll adds up quickly.
- Use the Hala App for Short Trips: The app occasionally offers promotional discount codes (e.g., 20% off your next ride) which can make Hala cheaper than street-hailed taxis for short hops.
- Share Rides: If you are traveling with a colleague or friend to the same area, sharing a standard DTC taxi is vastly cheaper than taking two separate Ubers or Careems.
- Travel Off-Peak: While the meter rate doesn't change, avoiding rush hour (7 AM - 9 AM and 5 PM - 8 PM) prevents the meter from ticking up due to waiting time in traffic.
